UFC 207 Recap

As the night came to an end at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas one thing was for sure, the aura of invincibility that once was Ronda Rousey was no more. It only took 48 seconds for Amanda Nunes to effectively retire the greatest women's MMA fighter of all time. As Ronda stood in the center of the octagon dazed and starring into the abyss with blood running from her nose; after the shock of Nunes blitzing her with a series of devastating punches you couldn't help but to feel bad for Ronda. Whether or not you like Rousey she has done so much for the sport of MMA and is a pioneer for women's MMA. Ronda released a statement a day after the devastating defeat stating that she needs to take some time and reflect and that's the best thing she has said in a long time. In the fight of the night Cody "No Love" Garbrandt dominated the dominator Dominick Cruz. Numbers do lie in the case of this fight because Cruz bested Garbrandt in nearly every relevant statistical category yet he lost the fight by unanimous decision. Never leave the outcome of a fight in the judges hands easier said than done. In either case Garbrandt got the better of Cruz in every exchange and dropped Cruz 3 times in one round alone prompting two judges to score that round a 10-8 for "No Love". A new bantamweight champion to start the new year. TJ Dillashaw was as close to flawless as you could be without actually being perfect. Dillashaw went out and took care of business by shutting down a surging John Lineker who many thought would end TJ's night violently. With this victory Dillashaw has positioned himself nicely as the number 1 contender in the bantamweight division. Neil Magny eked out a unanimous decision win over former welterweight king Johnny "Big Rig" Hendricks. Maybe I was watching a different fight than the judges were because I don't know how anyone who understands the sport of MMA could've awarded a decision for Magny. UFC newcomer Niko Price made short work of former welterweight top prospect Brandon Thatch by submitting him via arm triangle in round 1. These were my biggest takeaways.-Mike Straus
